Boxers Fracture

A boxer’s fracture refers to a break in the bones that form the knuckles of the hand, typically affecting the metacarpal bones in the hand.

A boxer’s fracture is very common, and one of the most frequent reasons why a patient visits Dr.Wartinbee.

  • Do you have pain at your knuckle after a fall or after punching something?

  • Do you have swelling at your knuckle and difficulty or pain with moving your finger after a fall or after punching something?

  • Symptoms: Pain, swelling, deformity, and difficulty moving the affected finger or hand. The knuckle may appear sunken or misaligned, and there might be bruising or tenderness.
  • Pathology: This fracture usually occurs due to a direct impact or force to a clenched fist, commonly during a punch or a fall. The fifth metacarpal (the bone leading to the little finger) is most frequently affected.
  • Treatment Options
  • Immobilization: Dr. Wartinbee may be able to treat your fracture with splinting or casting to stabilize the fractured bone and allow it to heal properly. His clinic has the ability to provide these options, right when you come for your visit.

  • Reduction: Sometimes, the fractured bone may need to be aligned manually (reduced)to ensure proper healing. Dr. Wartinbee is an expert at this.

  • Surgery: For severe fractures with significant displacement or multiple fractures, surgery might be necessary to realign the bone. Dr. Wartinbee is an expert at this.

  • Rehabilitation: Following the healing period, rehabilitation through therapy may be recommended to regain strength, flexibility, and function of the hand. Dr. Wartinbee, has specialized hand and wrist therapists right at his office, to help you get the best results possible.

Appropriate treatment, often tailored to the individual’s situation, can effectively improve your function. Consulting Dr. Wartinbee for an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan is crucial for managing your fracture effectively.
